Alien Express

Even though no performative work can ever be repeated in the exact same way, Alien Express is the kind that capitalizes on the self-transformational ability of an art material in relation to the changing circumstances of its presentation and reception.

The work’s two creators (Žigan Krajnčan and Gašper Kunšek) develop their material as friends-explorers, venturing out beyond a variety of sites to the very wildlands of expression.

Based on the form of the duet (the decisive binary structure), they employ inventive thinking – or, the principles of structured improvisation – and through continuous adjustments of representation attempt to capture a sense of the ‘whole’ or at least of its territory.

More becoming than being, Alien Express is a living organism (foreign, or even alien) that grows through repetitions and shortages, ploys and wears, adjustment and resistance, phototropic attitude and nocturnal moods. The work wishes to cultivate a kind of telepathic communication between performers and audience and the contribution of music (Kristijan Krajnčan) and lighting (Borut Bučinel) to this end is of paramount importance.

If this recalls the most legendary alien-contact scene in sci-fi filmography, it is because the start of every friendship in every universe is an unconditional coming-together. Going out into the streets and neighborhood of Thiseio, amongst diverse audiences, the Alien acquires the urgency of Express, of this which starts from down and in to reach up and far.
